‘Ira Aldridge – The Shakespearean Actor’ A book by Judy Hepburn

July 15

“Ira Aldridge is coming to the theatre today. He’s going to play Othello. We’re making history.”

It’s 1833, and Fred is working as a stagehand at the Theatre Royal with his best friend, Trooper the cat.

When the theatre’s star becomes ill, the famous American actor Ira Aldridge steps in to play the role of Othello. Can Fred and Ira Aldridge help save the show?”

Face Front are delighted to be highlighting this wonderful new book for young readers aged 7+ from Enfield resident and Face Front patron: Judy Hepburn.

We are in particular excited to be highlighting this brilliant book because of its theatrical story, and how it introduces and celebrates an important figure in the history of acting and theatre. It also reminds us of the continued need to recognise the contributions of under-represented communities within the stories we tell  and increase the visibility off these communities across all artistic platforms – something that Face Front Inclusive Theatre looks to put at the heart of its work.
