Behind the Scenes: Exploring Mental Health Through Play
Hello, my name is Emily and I recently had the pleasure of facilitating my “Mental health first aid kit” workshop for three different groups at Face Front Inclusive Theatre.
My journey here began back in 2020 during my student placement and I’ve been helping out with their projects ever since. My early experiences with Face Front greatly inspired me to train as a Counsellor at Farnborough College. During my training I’ve learnt how to adopt a person-centred approach, guide group reflections and tailor mental health tools for diverse needs.
I always feel slightly nervous when facilitating, especially when we’re discussing difficult or sensitive topics. I knew I couldn’t avoid this, but I also wanted the experience to be joyful and connecting for everyone involved. My goal was to combine tangible coping strategies with Face Front’s signature playful and imaginative approach. Together, the participants explored mental well-being through several creative activities:
- Emotional Games
- The Stress Bucket (A visual, overflowing bucket demonstration to illustrate the heavy weight of daily stressors)
- Theatrical Freeze Frames
- Affirmations
- A Closing Song
Ending the week I felt empowered and connected, reminded of how important and bonding play can be. It was an honour to hear various members share their experiences and daily uplifts, with many highlighting the vital importance Face Front holds in assisting their mental health. Quoting that ‘no-one talks about this stuff, so it’s important to have the space’ and that ‘spending time at InterACTion (one of Face Front’s groups) brings a smile to my face’. Their experiences mirror national data from the Peoples Health Trust, which shows that 76% of participants in community programmes report a stronger sense of belonging, actively combatting social isolation. By blending the power of play and community with practical tools, we can continue to build these vital spaces where everyone feels seen, supported and understood.
